Rainbows Hospice For Children And Young People
Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is a 14 bedded unit that provides palliative short breaks, symptom control and end of life care for children and young people who have a life limiting or life-threatening condition and their families. The hospice provides residential and day care, psycho-social support and out-patient facilities. The hospice has a number of therapy and activity rooms and delivers a range of services including medical care, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, music therapy, complementary therapy and specialist play activities. Outreach services include family support (for example active listening, advice and signposting, form filling, liaison key working), sibling support, cultural support, spiritual support, youth work and bereavement support. Families are offered 16 nights of routine 'bookable' short break overnight care a year. In addition to this we provide unlimited emergency care (for clinical or social need). Children and young people are able to stay at Rainbows with or without their family and family flats or bedrooms are available on request. Rainbows supports children and young people who have a confirmed life-limiting or life-threatening condition. Children and young people can access the hospice if they have a degenerative condition that will lead to their death before or during early adulthood, are currently 'at risk' from a potentially life-threatening condition such as cancer, are receiving life sustaining long term ventilation, or are currently palliative. Referrals can be made verbally or in writing by anyone who has the permission of the child/young person and family to do so, this includes the family, social worker, community nurses, GP, consultant etc.
