About Elmsleigh Infant and Nursery School

In Derbyshire all families are entitled to up to 570 hours per year of free 'early education' from the term following your child's third birthday. Our school offers early education places for 3 & 4 year olds, please contact us for more information. In addition to our mainstream curriculum we support children with statements of SEN or Education Health and Care Plans in school with 'hours' of allocated support and additional teaching from SSSEN [Support Service for SEN ]. We have enhanced resource support funding to support 16 pupils with high level needs in Nursery and school. Eight places for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) eight places for children with other special educational needs. The structure of the day for a child with enhanced resource placement is dependent on the individual's needs. It can range from receiving additional support within the mainstream classroom, time in 'Rainbow Room' (a highly specialised and adapted classroom) or a mixture of both. Children are not necessarily assigned their own TA. The Nursery has D&A [Diagnostic and Assessment] places for children with additional needs as part of the pre statement assessment process for pre-school children. The Rainbow Room is staffed by the SENCO [teacher] and highly trained SEN Teaching Assistants [the number depends on how many children and their level of needs] High emphasis is placed on developing strategies to support communication and emotional regulation. The SCERTS model [Social Communication Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support] supports development of social and communication skills whilst helping manage behaviours and regulate emotions that may interfere with theirs and other's learning. The Rainbow Room contains a sensory room in which light, sound and a range of specialised equipment is used. Intensive Interaction [joining in with the behaviour or expressions the child is showing, similar to how a parent interacts with their baby in the early months of development] is used to aid communication through turn taking and play. Rainbow Room uses TEACCH [Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children] This model consists of one to one over learning in a distraction free work station using 'work then reward' first / next and a start and finish basket using tasks that have a definite beginning and end. This then moves on to the child managing tasks independently having a basket of tasks to complete and place in finish basket. Augmentive communication is used throughout including Makaton, sign and symbol use [including visual timetables]
