Holbrook School For Autism
We are a special school for students with autism and severe learning difficulties. We provide educational and residential provision for students during term time. We currently have 73 students, with 26 students accessing residential provision one night a week. Our school includes a substantial post 16 provision, based mainly at the Whitemoor Centre in Belper. Our curriculum is aimed at the needs of autistic students with learning difficulties, and preparing them, as far as possible, for an independent adult life. The curriculum varies with age but draws on the National Curriculum as appropriate, and the teaching of life skills (with vocational skills from 14-19). Our students are also able to access input from speech and language and occupational therapists (each in school two days a week). We also have a special unit for students with autism and challenging behaviour for students aged 5 to 11 years. We have provision for a small number of primary aged students. This will be during term time, and there will not be residential provision. Students will have autism and be of average ability, and they may display particularly challenging behaviour. There will be up to eight students in due course, accessing an individual programme based around the National Curriculum and life skills. Students will also be able to access input from speech and language and occupational therapists.
