Eamon Holmes presents Lisa with her award

One of our learners has gone on to win a national award and receive a first-class honours degree.

Lisa Barnett from Wingerworth completed four courses at Clay Cross adult community education centre through learndirect in 2008.

After going through a difficult time in her life she enrolled to study Computer Literacy and Information Technology (CLAIT) Diploma, European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and Level 2 in Adult Literacy.

But she has since gone on to receive a Foundation Degree in Youth Justice (Distinction) and BA Honours in Youth Justice (1st Class) which she passed in June 2011.

"I always knew I could achieve something but it was getting high marks studying at Clay Cross which made me think about studying further," explained Lisa.
"It just escalated from there because it was never my intention to go to university."

So impressive was Lisa's work that she won the East Midlands National Progression Award at the learndirect Achievement Awards.

The awards recognise learners who have progressed personally or professionally after completing a learndirect course.

Lisa said,

"I felt proud to be nominated so to win was amazing. I didn't know I had won until I was at the awards ceremonies and I was shaking when I heard. It was like being at the Baftas."

Lisa is considering studying another year to become a teacher but has not ruled out attending any more of our courses and would recommend anyone to give them a go.

She said:

"Everything is done at a pace suitable to you and the teaching is incredibly supportive. They have lots of time for you and I think the thing I have gained most from learning is becoming more confident in my ability.

"I am currently trying to encourage a girl who I work with to study a course because she has no qualifications."

She added,

"It has changed my perception of myself. I would recommend anyone giving them a go as you have nothing to lose."
