Read On - Write Away! (ROWA!) is an independent partnership, hosted within Derbyshire County Council, which aims to improve literacy and basic skills.

ROWA! has been in place for nearly 10 years and has already made an impact both locally and nationally.

At a local level, partnerships have been forged which have made significant differences to communities and those who live in them.

At a national level, Read On - Write Away! has shown a new way of creating meaningful and effective partnerships to offer the best service to all people.

In schools
Our School Based Training provides a range of wonderfully straightforward strategies for teachers, governors and parents/carers.

All are different, exciting, fun and contribute to school improvement.   Children enjoy them, they don’t impact on teacher workload but more importantly they simply work.

In the workplace
We offer an exciting range of courses designed to remove barriers to learning and to entice those hardest to reach learners back into education.

ROWA! can deliver customised courses to take account the needs of businesses and their staff.

Training can take place to suit work patterns and we can even provide one of our fully equipped buses if no suitable venue is available.

With libraries
Our partnership with libraries has enabled us to have one of the most successful Bookstart schemes in the country and develop the award winning Quality in Libraries Award, the first Skills for Life Quality Mark for Libraries in the country.

With families
Our family learning offers effective ways of encouraging families to work together using innovative approaches.

Our projects include a regional family learning pilot in prisons and community settings, an award winning Traveller program and a range of activities to encourage fathers to be involved in their children’s learning.

With adults
Courses and Activities for adults who want to brush up on their reading, writing, numeracy or IT skills.

With the emphasis on FUN, our courses for adults are designed to ease you back into learning in safe non-threatening surroundings, with friendly specialist teachers.

With volunteers
ROWA! Volunteers are encouraged to get involved with activities and to support others in the field of literacy and basic skills.

They receive good quality training as well as the rewards of giving something back to their community.

ROWA! is currently running three volunteer projects: Millennium Volunteers, Buddy Plus Project and Buddy Reading for looked after children.

With young people
ROWA! works with young people exploring positive and exciting ways to develop their talents.

We aim to build on existing interests, beliefs and skills in order to enable and encourage self development.

On the road
ROWA! has two double-decker buses which are purpose built to include OFSTED registered crèche facilities, ICT suites with internet access and meeting facilities.   One of the buses is a registered National Test centre.

ROWA! uses the vehicles to deliver many of its programs but is also able to hire them to different organisations. The vehicles provide a different and unique learning environment.   Find out how they could meet the needs of your organisation or community.
