Cromford Wharf Shed

The Wharf Shed Centre, located close to High Peak Junction on the bank of Cromford Canal (O.S. Map SK 3155 / 314E—558N) is of major historical significance, as well as being situated in an idyllic spot and site of special scientific interest.

Originally it was the terminus of the Cromford and High Peak Railway where goods were transferred from canal barges to railway wagons. Cromford Canal was finished in 1794 and linked Sir Richard Arkwright’s mills to the national waterway system. The rail system was built in the 1830s and as such is one of the world’s earliest railways.

It is no surprise then that the building is scheduled as an ancient monument and sits in the middle of one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites!

Converted to a residential centre in the early 70s, the Centre has just completed a major refurbishment (August 2004) and now provides excellent high quality facilities for groups of up to 24 people plus leaders.

The Centre is owned by Derbyshire County Council and is operated as part of the portfolio of Lea Green Development Centre which is located approximately two miles from the Wharf Shed.

The Wharf Shed is available to schools, youth and adult community groups both in Derbyshire and in other parts of the UK.  It may also be available during certain periods to commercial organisations, please contact Lea Green to discuss.

It offers unrivalled opportunities to undertake outdoor, cultural, historical, environmental or adventure programmes.

Conversely its peace and tranquillity gives groups the chance to get away from the pressures of urban life and take time out to relax or to concentrate on their own issues and agendas.

The Wharf Shed can be accessed on foot via High Peak Junction and the canal path and trail or by vehicle by turning off the A6 running between Ambergate and Cromford junction. Heading from Ambergate in the Matlock direction you will pass the Homesford Cottage Restaurant. Approximately 0.6 miles after this the turning for the Wharf Shed is on your right and is signposted on the right hand side of the road.
