Special guest on hand for new Glossop Library official opening

4 April 2018

A ceremony and fun day is to be held next month to officially open our new £2m library in Glossop.

BBC children's television presenter Ben Cajee will be the special guest at the official opening of the new library in Talbot Street on Thursday 31 May 2018, with all welcome to go along and join in the fun and explore the new facilities.

The new library is a two-storey extension attached to and located partly within our adult education building. The existing entrance and reception will be used by both the library and the adult education service.

It replaces the town's former library in Victoria Hall, which is closing its doors on Saturday 14 April 2018, with people being able to use the new library from Wednesday 25 April 2018.

At the official opening on 31 May 2018 CBeebies presenter Ben will tour the facilities, read stories and meet children from 11am to 2pm.

The opening ceremony will be performed by our councillors, Cabinet Member for Adult Care Councillor Jean Wharmby and her husband and County Council Vice Chairman Councillor George Wharmby.

Part of the opening ceremony will see the unveiling of a commemorative stone built into the wall behind the reception, marking that Councillors Jean and George Wharmby opened the building.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism, said:

"I'm delighted that our new library in Glossop will soon be open, offering modern and accessible facilities for local people of all ages, including free computer access.

"This reflects our commitment towards a strong local library network, with Glossop Library playing an important role in the community and serving as a focal point for local people."

Councillor Jean Wharmby said:

"There will be lots of new books, a children's library with storytime area, a dedicated teenage and young adult section, a non-fiction and local studies section, self-service points and areas for small groups of private study.

"It's going to be a real asset to the community and I'm very proud to be officially opening it next month."

The opening ceremony on Thursday 31 May 2018 is at 10.30am with the event and entertainment running from 11am to 2pm. Ben Cajee will be hosting sessions between 11am-12pm and 1pm-2pm. All are welcome to this free event. For further information and events you can visit the Derbyshire Libraries Facebook  (opens in a new window)
