Icelandic visitors land at Shipley Country Park
Visitors at Shipley Country Park were treated to a rare sight today when a large flock of whooper swans landed on Mapperley Reservoir.
A total of 81 birds were counted − thought to be these largest flock of these wild swans ever to be seen on the ground in Derbyshire.
Whooper swans are similar in appearance to the Bewick's Swan, but bigger. They are mainly a winter visitor to the UK from Iceland, although a couple of pairs nest in the north.
