A new £1.5 million short break holiday base for disabled young people and their families has opened its doors.

Derbyshire County Council and NHS Derbyshire County have jointly funded Meadow Lodge, which is in the grounds of the council's Lea Green Centre.

It gives disabled young people and their families the opportunity to enjoy a break and take part in outdoor activities.

Meadow Lodge has six twin bedrooms, all accessible with en-suite facilities. It has a lounge, kitchen and dining room, sensory quiet room, computer suite, soft play, grass and seating areas.

Staff at Lea Green can support disabled children and their families to take part in activities including canoeing, a team swing, obstacle course, zip wire as well as buggies, sensory rooms and a  ball pool, or families can just use it as a base to explore Derbyshire.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People, said: "We've worked closely with disabled young people and their families to provide the type of facility which benefits them.

"Many families told us that they really value outdoor activities and the chance to get away for a few days and Meadow Lodge will give them the perfect opportunity.

"Staff at Lea Green have the experience and expertise to provide activities to allow an exciting and rewarding short break."

Councillor Lewis and Ian Forrest, Chairman of NHS Derbyshire County, officially opened Meadow Lodge.

Ian Forrest said: "We're delighted to have opened this fantastic new residential facility in partnership with Derbyshire County Council.

"Disabled young people and their families who stay here will have a unique chance to enjoy a range of sports and adventure activities, arts and environmentally based studies.

"The purpose-built lodge boasts an array of well thought-out features such as the quiet sensory room, good use of natural daylight and underfloor heating.

"This welcoming environment is sure to support families and carers to meet the individual care needs of disabled young people."
