Second production ban for animal feed firm after court ruling

2 December 2011

A second ban has been placed on the production of animal feed at premises in Glossop after Derbyshire County Council again took court action.

The county council was granted a Feed Hygiene Prohibition Order at Buxton Magistrates Court yesterday (December 2) preventing UK Farm Feeds Limited from using premises at UK House, Peakdale Road, as a feed business.

It is the second time the authority has successfully applied for such an order against the company following an initial ban in August this year.

UK Farm Feeds was using waste food, such as yoghurt and bakery waste, to produce pig feed.

It cleaned up its act following the first hearing and was granted permission to produce animal feed at the site again, but a second ban has been put in place because:

  • Feed processing and storage facilities, equipment, containers and crates were not kept clean

  • Waste materials not suitable as feed were not isolated and identified in an appropriate way

  • A lack of waste management on site means pest control plans are ineffective

Councillor Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said:

"We take this very seriously because animal feed produced on these premises could be used to feed animals which end up on human dinner plates.

"Swift action was taken as soon as it became apparent that the regulations were again not being complied with."

The order was issued under The Feed (Hygiene and Enforcement) (England) Regulations 2005.

The restrictions will stay in place until the premises comply with the regulations.

UK Farm Feeds Limited was ordered to pay Derbyshire County Council's court costs of £720.

The feed hygiene controls are in place to ensure the safety of animals and humans through the consumption of food producing animals.

They were introduced following the Foot and Mouth Outbreak in 2001.
