Fly-tipping project

enviro crime scene Fly-tipping in Derbyshire has fallen 27 per cent since the launch of a campaign to help put a stop to it.

Fly-tipping looks a mess, it's a serious crime and it costs taxpayers money to clear up.

That's why Derbyshire County Council, the Environment Agency and Derbyshire's eight district and borough councils launched a campaign to tackle the tippers.

Since February 2008 they have:

  • Set up one number for reporting fly-tipping no matter where you are in the county to make it easier for people to use. Call Derbyshire on 08456 058 058

  • Received more than 680 calls from people reporting fly-tipping or passing on information to help trace offenders

  • Helped reduce fly-tipping incidents from 6,346 in 2006/07 to 4,573 in 2009/10.

  • Reduced annual clean up costs for fly-tipping across the county by more than £100,000

  • Increased enforcement action such as road stops, duty of care visits, fixed penalty notices and prosecutions by 37 per cent

  • Increased public searches on the Environment Agency website for registered waste carriers by 300%

  • Given face-to-face advice to more than 5,000 people at Environment Agency roadshows

  • Encouraged more than 448 Derbyshire businesses (excluding Derby City) to register as waste carriers (up to September 2009).
