The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a general and specific duty on local authorities to promote race equality. Under the general duty we must work to:
eliminate discrimination
promote equality of opportunity
promote good race relations between people of different racial groups.
The specific duties under the Act require us to produce and publish a Race Equality Scheme and to ensure that arrangements are made for monitoring and reporting on race equality within employment and service delivery.
We have produced our third Race Equality Scheme 2008-2010 which shows how we will meet our duties. This was approved by Cabinet on 14 October 2008. There is an Action Plan within the Scheme which sets out what we will be doing in the next two years to achieve the agreed priorities. Reports on progress will be published annually.
A summary version of the Race Equality Scheme 2008-2010 gives an overview of the key points and can be viewed or downloaded from the related documents section.
Our previous Race Equality Scheme 2005-2008 is also available to view or download from the related documents section.
