What we do

Our work can be split between the supervision of convicted offenders and working to prevent youth crime.
Here we show in more detail the different aspects of our work.

Supervision of offenders
Our work is guided by the Youth Justice Board (YJB) and most of the activity undertaken is with offenders who have been through the criminal justice system.
Work undertaken with young people normally consists of an initial assessment followed by an intervention programme based on their needs. The process is as follows:

  • Court Order or Final Warning issued. Find out more about Court Orders.
  • An initial assessment of the young person is undertaken.
  • A plan is drawn including how to address offending behaviour, ways to compensate the victim or community and input from specialist workers (for example education, health and drugs workers).
  • Review of the young person's progress on the order.
  • When the court order expires another assessment is made.

The YJB have demanding standards for the supervision of offenders. We work hard to ensure consistent standards are met across the county.

Court duty and court reports:

We provide court officers to all Derbyshire Youth Courts and will provide court reports on request to magistrates.

Appropriate adults:

When a young person is being interviewed by the police we provide an appropriate adult to accompany them if their parent or carer can’t be there. You can find out more on the appropriate adults page.

Preventing youth crime
The YJB has set us the target of making sure at least 200 young people a year benefit from preventative activity.
This includes:

  • Summer activity programmes
  • Working with the Youth Service and Connexions to target young people at risk
  • Work with schools on youth crime and the consequences of offending
  • Outreach work with young people in their own communities
We have introduced a Youth Inclusion and Support Panel to Derbyshire. The panel identify young people at risk through a multi-agency meeting. We then work with the young people to ensure that they do not become offenders.
Overall we aim to reduce youth crime by working with offenders to minimise their likelihood of re-offending and also by working in partnership to ensure that preventative schemes are in place for young people at risk of offending.
