Community & living
Derbyshire Trusted Trader has been set up by us to promote the many honest and reliable businesses and traders we have in the county and to make it easier for customers to find you.
Run by Derbyshire trading standards, it aims to build confidence in local businesses by promoting high standards and excellent customer care.
When you become a Derbyshire Trusted Trader, your name will appear on our searchable list of member businesses.
People can get hold of your details by using the search facilities on this website, by telephoning Call Derbyshire or even by popping into their local library.
Who can apply to be a Derbyshire Trusted Trader?
Anyone with a business base in Derbyshire or who does at least half of their work in the county can apply to join.
You could be a sole trader or a limited company, trader or retail business. The only exceptions are businesses solely trading with other businesses, because the scheme is designed to bring businesses and consumers together.
What’s in it for your business?
Being a Derbyshire Trusted Trader tells customers that you run an honest, fair and reliable business.
You will be able to use membership of the scheme to promote your reputation as a business that cares about its customers.
You will benefit from promotion through our publications, newspaper advertising, posters and leaflets in various community locations.
You will be entitled to use the scheme’s branding to promote your business (see Advertising your membership of Derbyshire Trusted Trader in the ‘related documents’ section at the foot of this page).
We will maintain publicly accessible web pages on our busy web site, with information about Derbyshire Trusted Trader. There is a searchable database of member businesses.
This includes your business address and contact information, and a link to your website if you have one.
Your business standards will receive independent recognition from a locally, regionally and nationally recognised trading standards service.
You will have the assurance of pre-entry assessment to ensure you are joining a credible scheme that is committed to upholding high standards of customer service.
For more details see section two of the code of practice (in the related documents section at the foot of this page).
What is the code of practice?
The code of practice is an important part of Derbyshire Trusted Trader, setting out entry requirements, your responsibilities, and what you get out of it.
It has sections about customer complaints and conciliation and mediation procedures involving Derbyshire trading standards.
There is also a section setting out how we deal with refusal, suspension and revocation of membership.
You have to sign up to the code as part of the application, and ensure your business practice meets its standards.
What checks are made about your business?
Without breaching your rights under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Enterprise Act 2002, checks will be made on your history using local and national databases.
Some of these checks are mentioned in the application form and section eight of the code of practice.
It may well be necessary for us to contact you by phone, or arrange a visit as part of your application.
