Community & living
DET was set up in 1997 to raise landfill funds for a wide range of community and environmental projects across the county.
The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF)
The LCF was formerly known as the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. It was set up in 1996. The fund enables landfill operators to donate part of their annual tax liability to environmental bodies such as DET. The donations can then be spent on eligible community and environmental projects.
The landfill operator can reclaim 90 percent of its contribution as a tax credit. The remaining 10 per cent can be found either by them or an independent third party.
Who can apply?
Applicants must be not-for-profit, have a constitution, elected officers and a bank account. Projects cannot have started and must be open to the general public.
For details of the type of projects that are eligible see the document "approved objects" in the more information section. The document "project examples" gives details of schemes that have received grants in the past.
The Derbyshire Environmental Trust (DET)
To meet the need for landfill tax contributions to go through an environmental body, the county council established DET in August 1997.
DET is registered with ENTRUST (the regulator of the LCF) as an environmental body (No. 014033). It is registered in England as a Company Limited by Guarantee (No. 3428850) and is a Registered Charity (No.1115855).
A list of trust members is available in the document "Trust Members" in the more information section of this page. To date DET has secured over £7.3 million from landfill operators for almost 400 projects.
Viridor Credits – Derbyshire (VC-D)
Since 2002 DET has distributed funding on behalf of Viridor Waste Management. Projects in the Chesterfield Borough, North East Derbyshire and Boslover District Council areas can apply. Viridor Waste Management operate the Erin landfill site between Poolsbrook and Duckmanton. Currently £240,000 is available to distribute each year.
For projects within two miles of Erin landfill site (between Poolsbrook and Duckmanton) the normal maximum grant is £20,000. For all other eligible projects in the Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover Districts the normal maximum grant is £10,000. Application packs are available from DET.
Lafarge Aggregates Limited (LAL)
Funding from LAL has been administered by DET since 1998. If your project is in the vicinity of LAL operational sites you may be eligible to apply for grant. In Derbyshire LAL have sites at Whitwell, Dowlow (near Buxton), Chaddesden (in Derby), Barrow on Trent/Swarkestone, Nether Langwith and Renishaw. There are also sites at Alrewas (Staffs border) and Hemmington (Leics border). Normally projects must be within 5 miles of such a site. The project site must also be within 10 miles of a licenced landfill site.
