Q  I would like to buy some upholstered furniture. How can I make sure that what I buy is safe?

Second-hand furniture must meet the same stringent standards as new furniture on sale in the shops.

There are a lot of problems with unsafe imported furniture being sold door to door or by small ads, so you should buy from a trader with a good reputation.

You should make sure that any furniture which you buy has a square label with a picture of a cigarette and a match surrounded by a green border clearly displayed.

There should also be a permanent label attached to the furniture. This is usually found under the seat cushions or on the underside of the furniture and is headed carelessness causes fire. This label includes details of how the filling materials and covers comply.
