About your county

Find out more about Derbyshire through population, census and employment figures.

The county of Derbyshire forms the north-west part of the East Midlands and covers an area of 255,071 hectares and at mid-2007 had a population of 758,150 people.

There are strong contrasts between the rural west of the county and the urban east. The Peak District National Park covers most of north-west Derbyshire, covering more than a third of the county’s land area.

Around 15 per cent of Derbyshire’s population live in rural areas (villages, hamlets and isolated dwellings), 65 per cent live in urban conurbations containing more than 10,000 people and the remainder in towns and urban fringe areas.

Due to the diverse nature of the county it is important that we understand the make-up and needs of both our communities and businesses in order to ensure we deliver appropriate services.
