Ilkeston and District 50+ Forum
We are a group of like-minded people who meet regularly to share views, enjoy entertainment and exchange information with a variety of guest speakers. We cover the 50+ communities for Ilkeston and the surrounding district within the Borough of Erewash. We have a growing membership which is currently in excess of 200.
In the last few years we have held a number of informative open events for our members with invited speakers from a number of different organisations including the Derbyshire Handy Van scheme, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and credit unions.
We also produced a book containing members favourite recipes, all beautifully illustrated by our chair's granddaughter. The book was a local bestseller!
We have had interesting talks from local people, including one form Steven Flinders, on the history of Ilkeston from Tudor to modern times. We have also had some very enjoyable musical entertainment from the Antique Rogues Show and the R and Ds to name just a few.
One of our greatest achievements has been our introduction of a very successful 'Computers for Beginners' course, held at Ilkeston library. This is ongoing and we have a waiting list for places.
What we're doing
In addition to our quarterly open forum meetings, we organise regular trips out for our members to places such as Bletchley Park, Warwick Castle, Chatsworth House and the Christmas Market at Ripon Retail Park.
We run annual coffee mornings held in the Mayor's Parlour at Ilkeston Town Hall and host a stall at Ilkeston Carnival.
We continue to invite a variety of speakers to our open forum meetings. For example, at our August 2013 meeting the speakers were Alan Charles the new Police and Crime Commissioner for our area, Jackie Rawlings who provided an update on the NHS and Steven Flinders who delivered the second part of his history talk.
