Impact of lack of sleep on the workforce

We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. Sleep is critical for good health and wellbeing.

There is a strong relationship between sleep and physical and good mental health. A lack of sleep can have a significant impact on the way we think and feel.

Adults need between 7 and 9 hours sleep each night and individuals who sleep fewer than 6 hours each night have a 13% higher mortality risk than those who sleep at least 7 hours.

Two-hundred-thousand working days are lost in the UK every year to insufficient sleep at a cost of around £40 billion.

The impact on the workforce can be damaging but it is possible for employers and line managers to take positive steps to help employees.
