Physical activity and the workplace

Adults should do some type of physical activity every day.

It's important to reduce time spent sitting and break up long periods of not moving with some activity. Employees with office-based jobs can often spend hours in front of a screen.

The workplace is an ideal setting to encourage employees to take up or increase levels of physical activity alongside colleagues. This could be a lunchtime stroll, walk and talk meetings or organising a workplace sports team.

Support and resources

Live Life Better Derbyshire offer free physical activity advice and support to people who are on their weight management programme and for people who are inactive.

The NHS also provide physical activity guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64.

We're also working with Orcha, to provide a library of digital health and welling support. Search ORCHA for physical activity such as Active 10 - which tracks walking.

Active Travel

Active travel describes any means of travel that involves activity. This includes walking and cycling, taking the bus and getting off one stop sooner, or even the train if it includes a walk to and from the station.

Active travel can help employees to save money, and is great for health and wellbeing, from having a chat, to improving mood, not to mention reductions in congestion and harmful emissions.

For employers, it means a fitter, more engaged, valued and motivated workforce, with the potential to reduce absenteeism and increase productivity. Cycle to Work schemes save employers National Insurance contributions, whilst the more staff who travel actively means less pressure on car parking and improved neighbour relations.
