Gambling problems and work

Gambling disorder goes wider than the impact on the individual, and includes adverse effects on relationships, finances, and physical and mental health.

The negative harms can also start to impact on an employee's work through a decrease in productivity and motivation, as well as adherence to workplace safety protocols and increased vulnerability to criminal activity.

Gambling disorder also significantly contributes to workplace absences. OHID (formerly Public Health England) estimate that the economic burden of gambling disorder in the UK to be over £1.2 billion per year.

The ease of access through online, remote platforms has increased gambling-related harm over the last few years, including over the COVID-19 pandemic period, with gambling being conducted in a discreet and solitary way, emphasising why gambling is often described as the 'hidden addiction'.

Therefore, tackling gambling disorder is an issue that employers and employees can work on collaboratively to normalise conversations and to ensure that the working environment is a safe and empathetic space.

If you work in Derbyshire or support Derbyshire-based residents, we offer free gambling-related harm training. The course is appropriate for staff and volunteers in all organisations, regardless of background, experience, specific job role, or learning style.
