Historic Buildings - Appendix 1

The register contains the following Grade I and II* listed buildings which are currently at risk.

Building Name: North Mill, Bridgefoot, Belper
District: Amber Valley

Status: I

1803. Former cotton spinning mill. Iron-framed, brick skin and vaulting. Graduated slate roof (bitumen coated). Now in use as offices and visitor centre.

Partially occupied. Attic and basement unused. Reslating of roof is now urgent; temporary repairs carried out 1997; brick parapet requires repointing and repairs to lead lined gutters; problems with regular flooding of basement. Condition Survey/Conservation Plan completed. Scheme for whole site soon to be submitted.



Building Name: Belper Weir
District: Amber Valley

Status: II*

18C horseshoe weir and sluices.

Tenanted to hydro-electric company using turbine house; some repair needed to weir walls. Diving inspection revealed need for minor repairs.



Building Name: Dalley Farm, Ashbourne Road, Belper
District: Amber Valley

Status: II*

Mid C19 model farm, developed by Strutt Estate. Stone and brick with tiled roofs. Unusual and rare survival.

PART VACANT. Exemplary model farm of its period. House still occupied. Owners seeking new uses. Possibility of grant aid from English Heritage for structural repairs.



Building Name: Road footbridge, Bridgefoot, Belper
District: Amber Valley

Status: II*

1795. Georgian footbridge linking former mills. Gritstone; slate.

VACANT. Condition Survey/Conservation Plan nearing completion. Repairs to windows carried out. Request submitted for electronic warning sign provision. Bridge and approach re-signed in 1997.



Building Name: Range of outbuildings, Hardwick Hall
District: Bolsover

Status: II*

C17. Stone; stone slate roof.

The cottages have been restored and are now in use. Proposals are being considered for the stables.



Building Name: Banqueting House, Barlborough Hall
District: Bolsover

Status: II*

LC16. Stone; corrugated sheet roof. Contains fine ornamental plaster

Long term lack of effective maintenance. Programme in hand as for Hall



Building Name: Conduit Houses (range of 4), Bolsover
District: Bolsover

Status: II*

C17. Conduit houses. Consolidated as ruins, but vulnerable

All 4 need to be brought into single ownership. Consolidation works undertaken.



Building Name: Mill buildings at Walton Works, Off Walton Field Road
District: Chesterfield

Status: II*

Late C18 with later extensions and alterations. Former Cotton Mill. Coursed squared stone and red brick with slate, pantile and stone slate roofs.

Vacant and very poor condition due to vandalism. Application for conversion to residential units under consideration, 2007/8.



Building Name: Darley Abbey Mills (East, West, Long & Middle Mill), Old Lane
District: Derby

Status: I

1783 and later. Red brick; slate roofs. Major complex of former cotton mills.

Some parts well used, others in poor condition.



Building Name: St Helen's House, King Street
District: Derby

Status: I

Circa 1726. Built by the Gisbourne family and later the home of Joseph Strutt. Fine Palladian façade of ashlar; 3 storeys.

Poor condition with risk of further deterioration due to lack of maintenance. VACANT



Building Name: Former Railway Workshop, Derby Railway Station
District: Derby

Status: II*

Railway workshop of 1939. One of the few remaining parts of the original Midland Railway Station.

Derby Pride marketing the buildings. VACANT. Being converted for use by Derby College, 2007/8.



Building Name: Former Engine Shed, Railway Terrace, Derby Railway Station
District: Derby

Status: II*

Engine Shed C.1839. One of the few remaining parts of the original large Midland Railway Station.

Derby Pride is actively marketing the buildings. VACANT. Disused and in a poor state of repair. Being converted for use by Derby College, 2007/8.



Building Name: Allestree Hall, Allestree Park
District: Derby

Status: II*

House C.1802. Ashlar, ground floor windows with Ionic columns.

Essential repair works carried out but future use uncertain. VACANT.



Building Name: St Mary's Bridge, Bridge Gate, Derby
District: Derby

Status: II*

C18 stone bridge of 3 arches, divided by buttresses each with a small pedimented niche.

General condition - poor. In need of immediate investigation.



Building Name: Former Carriage Shop, Derby Railway Station
District: Derby

Status: II*

Railway wagon works of 1840 with later alterations.

Poor condition with risk of further deterioration due to lack of maintenance.



Building Name: The Mansion House, Church Street, Ashbourne
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: I

Late C17 with fine C18 re-fronting. Red brick with tiled roof. Domed (copper) octagonal music room. Fine interior.

External site visit with English Heritage in May 2003. Air of neglect but no serious structural concerns. Railings painted summer 2004. Small localised fire in 2006. No change to principal building. New owner contacted late 2006 and 2007. See national register.



Building Name: Aqueduct to Cromford Mill, Mill Road, Cromford
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: I

Cast-iron aqueduct dated 1821. Spans Mill Road from Building 17.

Accidental damage to aqueduct 2002. Whole structure broken and pier supports damaged. External assessors report undertaken. To be reconstructed 2008/9.



Building Name: Saw Mill, Park Lane, Osmaston Park
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: II*

C1845. Limestone with stone slate roof. Ornate Swiss style. Waterwheel attached.

General deterioration to fabric. Building in use by Osmaston Estate for storage. Discussions with EH and Estate Office in Jan 2006.



Building Name: Stydd Hall, Stydd Lane, Yeaveley
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: II*

C17 Tower House with early Victorian alterations.

Work still required to upper floors. Trustees carrying out repairs as required but comprehensive assessment is required. Garden wall bulging. In grounds of SAM.



Building Name: Lowerstreet Farmhouse, Lower Street, Doveridge
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: II*

Farmhouse. C16 with mid C18 rear wing forming 'T' shpae. Timber framed, plastered infill panels. Clay tile roofs and brick stacks.

Not included on 2003 National Register but considered at Risk. Currently occupied. In need of repair. General lack of maintenance. Decay of timber-framing and plaster panels. Brickwork deterioration. Monitor.



Building Name: Granary Barn, Longford Hall
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: II*

Large barn, circa 1760. Red brick with stone dressings and crow-stepped gables. Clay tiled roofs.

Some slipped, missing roof tiles. Minor decay to brickwork.



Building Name: Longford Hall Farm, Stableblock and Coach House
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: II*

Stableblock C1760-65 by J Pickford. Red brick with stone dressings. Slate roofs. Whitehurst clock. Superb interior with Tuscan columns/vaulted ceilings to stable stalls.

Included on 2003 National BAR Register. Unoccupied. Air of neglect and lack of maintenance. Structural cracks, saturated brickwork, slipped slates, excesive decay to part of eaves. PP and LBC granted (sect 106) January 2007. See National Register 'B' grade.



Building Name: Stydd Hall - attached wall, Stydd Lane, Yeaveley
District: Derbyshire Dales

Status: II*

High garden wall, probably C18, with brick face to the west side and stone face to the east side, topped by flat stone coping.

Garden wall bulging. In grounds of SAM.



Building Name: Bennerley Viaduct, Ilkeston
District: Erewash

Status: II*

Lattice ironwork structure.

Basic repairs undertaken. Currently no plans for further repairs or use in the foreseeable future.



Building Name: Bateman Mausoleum, St Mathews Church, Church Lane, Morley
District: Erewash

Status: II*

1897. Bateman family mausoleum (by G F Bodley). Gritstone with parapets. Decorative plaster interior.

Water causing damage to interior decoration. Minor repairs carried out 1995. Monument and Mausoleums. Trust to apply for English Heritage grant for full restoration.



Building Name: The Crescent, Buxton
District: High Peak

Status: I

1780-90. Sandstone; Westmorland slate. Three/four storeys and attics formerly St Ann's Hotel, Library and Education Offices.

Approval given and funding in place for comprehensive repair and refurbishment as a 4 star Spa hotel, new tourist information centre, visitor centre and small shops, in conjunction with the Pump Room and Natural Baths. Work due to commence early 2008



Building Name: Wharf Shed, Canal Basin, Whaley Bridge
District: High Peak

Status: II*

1832. Coursed rubble sandstone warehouse straddling the canal.

Feasibility study underway by British Waterways Board for new uses.



Building Name: Torr Vale Mill, New Mills
District: High Peak

Status: II*

LC18 & C19. Large gritstone mill on River Goyt; Welsh slate roofs. Partially used for towel production.

Poor repair. Under used. Partnership Scheme priority but partial fire damage (July 2001) and difficulties with owner delaying progress with scheme for rescue. Vulnerable to vandalism. For sale.



Building Name: Cruck Barn, Frith Hall Lane, Walton
District: North East Derbyshire

Status: II*

C16. Coal measure sandstone; stone slate roof.

Some agricultural use restored but still deteriorating. MAFF grant approved - repair work has started.



Building Name: Swarkestone Bridge
District: South Derbyshire

Status: I

Bridge and causeway 3 quarters of a mile long. Bridge first referred to in 1204. Destroyed by floods 1795, and replaced 1795-7. 5 arches, ramped to centre.

DCC have embarked on systematic repair.



Building Name: Deercote, Calke
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

Brickwork structure formerly rendered with ashlar dressings 1773.

Remains have been stabilised with scaffolding and ropes. Further conservation works planned by National Trust to secure future as a consolidated ruin.



Building Name: Former T G Greens factory, Church Gresley
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

4 bottle kilns and associated factory buildings.

Vacant since 2004. Ongoing vandalism. Lead stolen from roofs in 2007. Currently for sale. SDDC has carried out appraisal of buildings. Urgent works under consideration.



Building Name: Walls at Swarkestone Old Hall, Derby Road, Swarkestone
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

Stone and brick up to 10 feet high.

Parts have been ruinous since first listed. Deterioration continues.



Building Name: Coalbrookdale Footbridge, Egginton
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

1812. Cast-iron curved bridge.

Derelict. No public access at present. Supporting brick structure deteriorating.



Building Name: Elvaston Castle
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

Mainly EC19 and C16 origins. Stone; slate roofs.

Inspected Nov 2007. Mostly vacant and under-used upper floors. New use under investigation as part of a comprehensive proposal for Elvaston Castle and Estate.



Building Name: Walton Hall & attached stable range & garden wall
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

EC18. Small country house. Red brick. Three storeys. Two storey stables and coach house range.

House now permanently occupied but top floors still underused.



Building Name: Weston Hall, Weston-on-Trent
District: South Derbyshire

Status: II*

C17. Large red brick house forming one half of original design.

Upper two floors derelict. Scheme for conversion to hotel in progress. Basement bars complete. No change in condition. Current application for amended hotel use on upper floors.
