Income support

On a low income? Can you get income support?

You can claim Income Support if:

  • you are under 60
  • your income is lower than the amount the Government sets as appropriate for your circumstances
  • your savings are less than £16.000.

Most people are expected by the Government to look for work and claim benefit by 'signing-on' for Jobseeker's Allowance.  However, there are a number of situations where it is recognised that you may not be able to work, or look for work, and so you can claim Income Support.

Some examples of these situations are:

  • those who are too ill to work
  • disabled people
  • carers
  • single parents with a child under 16.

These are only some examples.  The Welfare Rights Benefits Helpline can give you more information on the benefits relevant for your circumstances.
