Leaving and aftercare services

The leaving and after care service is available to anyone who meets the criteria set out in the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000.

A law came into effect in October 2001, which changed the way services are offered to young people leaving care.

The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 means the county council now has a duty to support you after you leave care up to the age of 21. Plus, if you continue in education the council could support you up to the age of 24.

We have teamed up with Barnardos and the NCH Action for Children to make sure we are offering you the best possible support.

What does the service provide?

  • Preparation for leaving care from 15 and a half.
  • Advice support and befriending until 21 years of age.
  • An allocated leaving care advisor for every care leaver.
  • Financial support and maintenance for all 16/17 year olds.
  • Financial support for young people in further and higher education.
  • Close links with housing providers and other specialist agencies.
  • Social and recreational activities to help overcome isolation when leaving care.
  • Regular contact, at least four times and more if needed.
  • Help with the financial and practical issues involved in setting up home.
  • Help developing and reviewing the Pathway Plan.

If you are coming up to 16 and beginning to think about when you leave care, then there is leaflet for you.
