Training For All (ARC)
ARC has been awarded funding from Capacity Builders ‘Improving Reach 2008 -11’ investment programme to address this issue by working with BME VCS learning disabilities organisations and training sector organisations to develop protocols to improve access to and knowledge of the training needs of the BME VCS learning disability sector.

The development of these protocols will ensure more small BME VCS learning disability organisations in England receive high-quality support services which are appropriate for them.

The protocols will enable them to access nationally recognised training that takes account of their cultural needs, thereby ensuring such organisations are fully able to maximise their potential and increase their day to day focus on services that they deliver to BME people with learning disabilities.

BOOM! 2009 – Miss it Miss Out
Do you work with young people aged 16 – 25?

Got a great idea for a film?

Want to raise interest in a local issue? BOOM!

A partnership between Clubs for Young People, V the youth volunteering charity, MTV are giving young people the opportunity to make a film or video about what’s happening in their area – their opinions, their concerns, and their lives. They film it. We’ll show it. Each film will go in the running to be broadcast across the nation on MTV.

BOOM! is a development project that enables young people (aged 16-25) to learn and put into practice film production and creative media skills that open up volunteering and vocational opportunities.

Through BOOM!, young people are challenged to make short films and videos that reflect their opinions, concerns, interests and passions – from video diaries to news bulletins and reports and reportage-style mini-documentaries.  You don’t need to be Steven Spielberg to start.

BOOM provides training for young volunteers to do this and each group get the very latest cameras and iMacs to get the budding film makers started, as well as covering all travel costs to the two training sessions.

There will be a training session in Derby on Sunday 1 March 2009 and places are still available.

Global Youth Work Trainer Course
Earlier this year, Global Education Derby (GED) was successful in securing funding from the Department for International Development (DFID) in order to bring about an expansion in the scope and quality of global youth work carried out in the East Midlands region.

The Global Youth Work Project East Midlands is a first attempt to produce a coherent regional approach to global youth work, making use of the specific expertise and strengths of the voluntary sector and Local Authority youth services along with higher education providers. As such the project has potential national significance.

One of the key objectives of the project is to develop and support a group of global youth work trainers drawn from across the nine local authority areas in the region, both voluntary sector and local authority employed.

The first stage in developing this group is to recruit participants to attend training delivered by De Montfort University which will be accredited for 15 credits at Masters Level. There are 15 places available on this course, at least six of which are dedicated to the voluntary sector.

Following the completion of the course the newly accredited global youth trainers will be expected to get involved in the wider outcomes of the project, and will be supported by one of the project agencies in developing the global dimension within their own training practice and within the wider training development of your organisation.

The course fees have been covered by the funding from DFID, however, each candidate will need to fund their own transport to the venue along with accommodation if required. Should additional support with these costs be required please let me know as soon as possible. Additional support may be available if funding within the budget can be identified.

Further information about the course, including dates and venue, can be found in the related documents section of this page together with a course booking form. Please return the form no later than Tuesday 25 November to the East Midlands Regional Youth Work Unit. If you wish to submit more than one application, please indicate a 1st and 2nd choice candidate on the respective forms.

Should you require further information about this course or the project, please do not hesitate to call 01332 298185 or email greg@globaleducationderby.org.uk.

Alternatively you can contact Clare Meakin at the Regional Youth Work Unit on 0115 8402012 or email clare@emrywu.co.uk.

Learning news - clarifying qualifications for trainers and teachers
Last year, Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) developed a new framework for trainers.  There has been some confusion over what these qualifications mean. Here’s a quick overview.

There will be three different qualifications for trainers and a distinction between Associate and Full teacher.

  1. PTTLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). This is the first stage for full teachers.

  2. CTTL (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector). This is for Associate Teachers.

  3. DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sctor). This is the second stage for Full teachers.

All teachers are required to register with the Institute for Learning and carry out CPD (Continuous Professional Development).

Why is this important?
Providers receiving funding fro the Learning Skills Council have a contractual obligation to comply with the regulations. In the future this may include organisations that receive public funds.

What about existing teachers?
Qualifications can be transferred to the new framework. Qualified teachers who are already teaching will not be required to carry out training courses or become licensed. However, this is encouraged, and over time may be increasingly expected.
