Derbyshire children deserve the best

As a fostering service we need to ensure all our foster carers meet the following standards.

  • Carers cannot smoke if caring for children under two or for children of any age with a health problem.

  • Carers need to have a spare room so that looked after children can have a room of their own.

  • During the assessment process, you must disclose any criminal offences so we can discuss your suitability as a carer. While we can accept that some offences will not limit your chance to foster, some offences will automatically prevent you from proceeding through the assessment.

  • Carers need to be in good physical and emotional health and not have had any serious illness or any major life changing event during the previous twelve months.

  • Foster carers are expected to have some experience or caring for children.

  • Carers will need to have accommodation that is of a good standard and where there time as occupiers is secure so that children can experience stability when placed.

  • Our foster carers are expected to help children with their education and take part in social activities.

  • Derbyshire County Council will check any pets in your household in case they would be unsuitable when placing a child or young person with you.
