The local Wirksworth Care Centre Project Group was established 11 years ago to focus on fundraising for the provision of a care centre/residential care home to service Wirksworth's older population. This local interest and hard work led to a bid being submitted to the Department of Health to develop an Extra Care scheme and a former NHS property in the centre of Wirksworth has been purchased and is being redeveloped in conjunction with Housing 21. The scheme will offer self contained one or two bedroomed flats for sale or rent plus a range of communal facilities and amenities. There are also plans to provide some of the accommodation to provide respite care facilities.
The scheme is due for completion in the summer of 2008 and will provide the following:

Accommodation will be provided within Waltham House, a Grade II listed property which will be refurbished and extended to provide extra care housing and a community day care centre.
The development has 39 units (comprising 14 units for affordable rent, 10 units of shared ownership and 15 units for sale) and other facilities (including a room for community usage and to enable the provision of day care services.
