Accessing day care

How do I access day care?

The referral method to day centres varies depending on whether they are run by Social Care Services, voluntary organisations or the independent sector.

Initially you will need to either contact your local area office or your nearest day centre to discuss your individual needs. If you prefer, you can ask someone else to ask for the service on your behalf (for example, your GP, district nurse or carer).

The Social Care Services department has criteria for the services it provides which are based on the eligibility framework for social care services. Staff can offer you advice and information or, if required, arrange an assessment of your needs at home.

You can arrange for a family member, carer or friend to be present when we visit. We will talk to you about what difficulties you have with every day tasks and how best we may be able to help you.

You will also be invited to visit the centre before you start. To access certain specialist Mental Heath groups, you will need a Care Co-ordinator from your local Community Mental Health Team.
