Why choose Direct Payments?

Here is just what some people say about receiving a Direct Payment.

"Direct Payments has certainly changed my life around for the better." Derbyshire Direct Payment User, Survey 1999.

"Before I had Direct Payments I had 43 different carers in 18 months. I now have one carer who is wonderful and I feel I have some of my independence back." Derbyshire Direct Payment User, Survey 1999

"The quality of my life has improved and I have regained much of my confidence. I can get out and do various activities, go to my whist club, the garden centre, the library and  I am getting to grips with the Internet! The support that a direct payment gives me allows me to enjoy life like everyone else does. I have always played a useful part in society. I am now able to talk to other people my age (or older) about the benefits of receiving direct payments, which is good for my self-esteem. I have the freedom to make future plans, which I never thought possible." An older person (Department Of Health Guidance)

All provision of Direct Payments are subject to either a Fair Access to Care (FACS) assessment for adults or an Integrated Children's Services (ICS) assessment of need, in respect of disabled children and young people and their parents or carers.

What some social workers/care managers have said:

"People have a voice when they’re in control of something…I just feel keeping people more in control gives them a better quality of life."

"It’s a great way to take hold of your own life."

"It’s so exciting! There’s a massive sense of satisfaction."

(Department Of Health Guidance 2003)
