Social care & health
These priorities will be translated into service developments through the various health and social care commissioning strategies.
The Department of Health’s Commissioning Framework points out that, “A good strategic needs assessment, which many areas are already doing, is based on a joint analysis of current and predicted health and well-being outcomes, an account of what people in the local community want from their services (those provided by the statutory sector and the wider market) and a view of the future, predicting and anticipating potential new or unmet need”. Commissioning Framework for Health and Well-being, Department of Health, March 2007.
The Health of Derbyshire report already comprises and summarises a range of health and well-being data about the current health issues that are high on the priority list with actions to address the issues, including:
Delivering a falls prevention drive across Derbyshire targeting older people
Improving information and education on drugs and alcohol abuse
Promoting and increasing public transport and access to leisure services
Increasing access to free home fire and safety checks.
Derbyshire’s Sustainable Community Strategy also sets out a series of actions designed to improve quality of life in Derbyshire.
For example, 89 per cent of Derbyshire residents say that they are satisfied with their area as a place to live.
The average dissatisfaction rate is 6 per cent but some groups report higher dissatisfaction than others. The most notable are; residents from a black and ethnic minority background (11 per cent), residents of Bolsover (11 per cent), people with a disability (10 per cent) and unemployed people (10 per cent).
Conversely only 3 per cent of South Derbyshire residents are dissatisfied.
Actions resulting from the JSNA will serve to augment those in the Sustainable Community Strategy. JSNA will have an impact by influencing commissioning such as the Older Persons Commissioning Strategy.
