Learning disability - family carers

We recognise that family carers - parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and friends - provide much of the care for people with learning disabilities in order to help them live independently.

Alongside the care we provide it is often the personal commitment of these family carers which enables the person they care for to expand their horizons and live a fulfilling life.

The Government's Valuing People programme encourages us to see family carers and essential partners and we are committed to developing the support you need.

We have many plans for the future to expand and improve the services we offer including:

  • increasing the level of short-break support

  • refurbishment of Parkwood Centre, Alfreton to increase community use and support for people with multiple and complex needs

  • continuing our partnership with the charity MacIntyre

  • emphasising services which help people to gain or keep a job

  • consulting with people with learning disabilities and family carers to shape the development of our services.
