Residential care homes
Residential homes are for people over the age of 18 who are no longer able to remain living independently at home due to physical or learning disabilities, sight or hearing loss, frailty or illness.
What should I expect?
Standard residential care provides accommodation, meals and assistance with personal care whenever the need arises over a 24 hour period. If the person has any nursing needs, assistance may be provided by the District Nursing Service visiting whenever they are needed.
'High dependency' residential care indicates additional moving and handling needs such as requiring a hoist to move.
In certain circumstances, short term places are also available for people recovering from a hospital stay or illness, or to give the person who cares for them a break from their caring responsibilities.
If you need financial support from Derbyshire County Council to enable you to move into a residential home, we will carry out an assessment to work out just how much, and what type of, care you need.
Can I choose my own home?
Yes if you don't need financial support from Derbyshire County Council. To find details of all care homes in the area visit our finding accommodation pages
All registered residential care homes are regulated by the Care Quality Commission so if you visit their website (opens in a new window) you will find copies of recent inspection reports and star ratings. Please note that 3 Stars = Excellent, 2 Stars = Good, 1 Star = Adequate, 0 Stars = Poor.
How much does it cost?
The costs of residential homes vary, often depending on the type of facilities provided and the amount and type of care you need.
